About me

With quilts we create memories of the future -

Memories of the Future.

Hello, I'm Marta and the creative mind behind Quiltwinkel.

Although quilting and patchwork are not traditional craft techniques in my family and no memories and stories were passed down, the thought of a closet full of textile stories and the desire to write my own quilt story inspired me to devote myself to quilting.

As a working mother, I know how difficult it can be to keep your own needs in the midst of all your work and family obligations. Like many others, I manage to take care of myself more or less well.

The topic of memories has occupied me for a long time and so in my master's thesis I dealt with photographic memories and their passing on in the form of photo stories.

I believe that every quilt has its own story and that the creative process of quilting gives us the opportunity to tell the stories of our world and pass them on to future generations.

With quilts we create memories for the future - Memories of the Future.

Quiltwinkel is my heart's project, which I launched alongside my professional activities and to which I dedicate myself with all my heart and all my strength and energy.

I look forward to growing together, exchanging ideas and sharing our own quilt stories.

What exactly is quilting?

Quilting is an ancient craft that involves joining three layers of fabric together to create a thick, insulating blanket or other textile structure. The three layers consist of a top fabric, a filling layer and a base fabric. The filling layer, also called stuffing, is usually made of cotton, polyester or another synthetic material and holds the two layers of fabric together.

Quilting involves sewing the two layers together to keep the filling layer firmly in the middle. This is usually done using a special sewing technique that involves sewing small stitches a few millimeters apart on either side of the quilt. The stitches can be arranged in different patterns and designs to give the quilt a special look.

What is meant by patchwork?

Patchwork is a sewing technique that involves assembling pieces of fabric of different colors and patterns to create a quilt or other textile product. Patchwork is often used to make quilts, but can also be used to make pillows, bags, clothing, and many other items.

Patchwork usually involves sewing the pieces of fabric together to form individual blocks and then assembling them into a larger piece. There are many different ways to assemble the pieces of fabric to create different patterns and designs. Patchwork offers the opportunity to be creative and create beautiful works of art.

History of Quilting

Quilting is an ancient art that was developed centuries ago in different parts of the world. The origins of quilting are not exactly known, but there is evidence that it was practiced as early as ancient Egypt and early China. For example, pieces of fabric sewn and pieced together have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs.

Quilting was widespread in Europe during the Middle Ages. Quilts were made from various materials such as wool, linen and cotton and played an important role in household economics. They were used as bedding, as a replacement for carpets and for thermal insulation.

Over time, the techniques and patterns of quilting have evolved. Today, there are many different types of quilts, each with its own history and meaning. Quilting is not only an art, but also a treasured tradition passed down from generation to generation. It is also a popular pastime and a way to be creative and create beautiful works of art.

The quilt

A quilt is usually made up of three layers of fabric that are sewn together to form a thick, insulating blanket or other textile structure. The three layers are the top fabric, the filling fabric and the backing fabric.

The face fabric is the top layer of the quilt and is the fabric that is visible when the quilt is in use. It can be made of various materials such as cotton, linen or synthetic fabrics and is usually the most noticeable element of the quilt.

The filling, also called batting, is the middle layer of the quilt and is usually made of cotton, polyester or another synthetic material. It holds the two layers of fabric together and makes the quilt insulating and warm.

The backing is the bottom layer of the quilt and sits beneath the batting. It is not usually visible when the quilt is in use and is usually used as a base for the stitching. The backing can be the same fabric as the outer fabric or a different fabric.

Together, these three layers create a quilt that is thick, insulating, and has decorative properties. There are many different quilting techniques and patterns that can be used to make different types of quilts.

The quilting process

The quilting process consists of a series of steps to create a finished quilt. Here is a general overview of the quilting process:

Fabric selection: This step involves choosing the fabrics for the quilt. Quilters can choose fabrics based on color, pattern, texture, or other factors.

Quilt design: Once the fabrics have been selected, the quilter must develop a design for the quilt. This may involve drawing a blueprint, choosing a quilt pattern, or simply developing a design as they quilt.

Cutting and assembling the fabric:

Once the design is decided, the quilter must cut the fabric into the required shapes and sizes. These pieces are then pieced together to form the top layer of the quilt.

Add fleece and backing:

Once the top layer is complete, the quilter adds a layer of batting (a type of padding) and a backing fabric to the quilt. The batting provides warmth and insulation, while the backing fabric creates a smooth surface on the bottom of the quilt.

Sewing the layers together:

The final step in quilting is sewing the three layers of the quilt together. This can be done by hand or by sewing machine and involves creating decorative stitch patterns to hold the layers together and add visual appeal to the quilt.
